Supplement Combination May Help Improve Memory and Attention
Timut pepper is a zesty, grapefruit-like spice that has been used for centuries by natives to the Himalayan region of Asia for its medicinal effects. MCT oil is made from a type of fat called medium-chain triglycerides. A recent study suggests that a combination of Timut pepper and MCT oil may help improve memory, attention, and mental fatigue.
Eighty-two people with an average age of 47 participated in the study. They consumed a supplement containing 2.8 grams of Timut pepper and an MCT oil extract or a placebo for 8 weeks. Participants took cognitive tests to measure cognitive function, mood, and cerebral blood flow. The tests were administered at baseline, 1, 3, and 5 hours after the first dose, and after 8 weeks of supplementation.
One dose of the supplement was found to significantly improve speed of attention and rapid visual information processing. Eight weeks of supplementation were found to improve overall cognitive function, working memory, and attention. Participants in the supplement group also experienced less mental fatigue during the last day of testing compared to those in the placebo group.
The study was conducted by researchers from Northumbria University. It was published online ahead of print on December 10, 2019 in the journal Nutrients.
