Supplement Combination May Help Reduce Fat Build-Up In The Liver
Bergamot is a plant that produces a type of citrus fruit. Oil from the peel of the fruit, and extract from the fruit juice, are have been used in traditional medicine for years. Cardoon is a member of the thistle family and is similar in appearance to the globe artichoke. According to a new study, supplementation with bergamot and wild cardoon may help reduce fat build-up in the liver.
Eighty-six adults with extra fat in the liver completed the study. They were given 600 mg of bergamot and wild cardoon or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Liver fat content was measured at baseline and at the end of the study.
The researchers found that the supplement group saw an average 9% reduction in liver fat accumulation compared to the placebo group. That reduction increased to 15% in supplement participants over the age of 50. Participants in the supplement group also saw a significant reduction in body weight compared to the placebo group.
The study was conducted by researchers from Chieti-Pescara University. It was published online ahead of print on August 11, 2020 in the journal Frontiers in Endocrinology.
