Supplement Containing Mangosteen and Propolis May Help Improve Gum Health
Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease that causes irritation, redness and inflammation of the part of the gum around the base of the teeth. Untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontitis and tooth loss. A new study has found that oral supplementation with mangosteen and propolis extracts may help improve gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.
One hundred and four adults with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis participated in the study. They received 194 mg of mangosteen and mangosteen and propolis extracts or a placebo daily for 8 weeks. The researchers evaluated the gingival index (which measures periodontal disease) and patient reported outcomes at baseline, week 4 and week 8.
Participants in the supplement group saw significant improvements in the gingival index at weeks 4 and 8 compared to the placebo group. There was also considerable improvement in patient reported outcomes compared to the placebo group. In addition, levels of crevicular interleukin, an inflammatory biomarker, were reduced in the supplement group.
The study was conducted by researchers from Yonsei University College of Dentistry. It was published online ahead of print on July 28, 2021, in the journal Nutrients.
