Supplementation With Aronia Berry Extract May Help Improve Blood Pressure and Cholesterol
Aronia berries, or chokeberries, are small, dark fruits that grow on shrubs of the Rosaceae family. They are one of the richest sources of plant antioxidants. A recent study has found that supplementation with aronia berry extract may help improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Researchers from the Franklin School of Investigative Health Sciences used 7 controlled trials in their analysis of aronia berry extract. The trials evaluated the effects of daily aronia berry supplementation for 6-8 weeks on blood pressure and total cholesterol.
The researchers found that daily supplementation with aronia berry extract for 6-8 weeks significantly reduced systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol. The effects were found to be most significant in adults over the age of 50.
The study was published online ahead of print on August 14, 2020 in the Journal of Dietary Supplements.
