Supplementation with B Vitamins and Omega-3’s May Benefit Heart Health
For optimal cardiovascular health, it is advised that people maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, consume a heart-healthy diet, and avoid smoking. A recent study suggests that supplementation with B vitamins and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may also be beneficial for cardiovascular health.
For their study, the researchers reviewed data from 15 clinical trials. The trials examined the association between supplementation with B vitamins and omega-3 PUFAs and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The researchers found that supplementation with B vitamins and omega-3 PUFAs together had a more beneficial impact on cardiovascular health than supplementation with B vitamins or omega’3’s only. They also found that healthy dietary patterns that include foods rich in B vitamins and omega-3 PUFAs were beneficial for cardiovascular health.
Specifically, supplementation with B vitamins and omega-3 PUFAs was found to help lower plasma concentrations of homocysteine, levels of circulating triglycerides, and levels of C-reaction protein.
The study was conducted by researchers from Texas State University and Indiana University. It was published online ahead of print on April 12, 2022 in the journal Nutrients.
A previous study found that cranberries may provide cardiovascular benefits.
