Supplementation With High Dose of DHA May Help Increase Testosterone Levels in Overweight Men

Obese men are more likely to have low testosterone. Men with very low testosterone are also more likely to become obese. A recent study has found that supplementation with fish oil that is high in DHA may help increase testosterone levels in overweight men.

Twenty-nine overweight or obese men participated in the study. They were given a fish oil supplement containing 860 mg of DHA and 120 mg of EPA or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Blood samples taken at baseline and at the end of the study were used to evaluate testosterone levels.

Testosterone levels were significantly increased in the fish oil group compared to the placebo group. Participants in the fish oil group also saw increases in EPA and DHA blood serum levels and reductions in omega-6 poly-unsaturated fatty acids blood serum levels.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Newcastle. It was published online ahead of print on November 12, 2020 in the journal Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes, and Essential Fatty Acids.
