Supplementation With Microalgae May Help Improve Performance of Recreational Athletes
Tetraselmis chuii (TC) is a green microalga with a high concentration of amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. A recent study suggests that supplementation with TC may help improve cardiovascular and respiratory parameters in recreational athletes.
Thirty-two recreational soccer players participated in the study. They were given 200 mg of TC or a placebo daily for 30 days. Participants performed a maximal treadmill test until exhaustion at the beginning and end of the study period. Heart rate, maximum rate of oxygen consumption, oxygen pulse, and hemoglobin levels were evaluated after each test.
Participants in the TC group saw decreases in heart rate following supplementation compared to baseline and the placebo group. They also saw increases in maximum rate of oxygen consumption, oxygen pulse, and hemoglobin levels. In addition, the TC group saw increases in glucose, uric acid, and creatinine compared to the placebo group.
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Extremadura. It was published on August 31, 2020 inThe International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
