The Probiotic Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum May Help With Weight Management
Previous research has indicated that gut bacteria may influence how food is digested and absorbed and how dietary fats are stored in the body, thus playing a role in weight management. Now a new study has found that supplementation with the probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 510 may help with weight management.
Participants in the study included 19 adults who were overweight or obese. They were given 15 billion CFU’s of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 510 or a placebo daily for 90 days. The researchers measured BMI, body weight, and waist circumference at baseline and at the end of the study period. They also evaluated gut microbiota composition.
Participants in the probiotic group lost an average of 7.5 pounds and saw an average decrease in waist circumference of 1.7 inches.
While no significant changes were seen in overall gut microbiota composition, significant increases were seen in Lactobacillus spp. There was also an increase seen in Bificobacterium spp.
The report was conducted by researchers from the University of Camerino. It was published online ahead of print on July 7, 2022 in the Journal of Applied Microbiology.
Probiotics in kimchi were found to help with weight management in a previous study.
