Tongkat Ali Extract May Help Improve Testosterone Levels
After age 30, most men begin to experience a gradual decline in testosterone. Symptoms associated with low testosterone levels include decreased libido, impaired erectile function, muscle weakness, increased adiposity, depressed mood, and decreased vitality. A new study suggests that tongkat ali extract may help improve testosterone levels and decrease fatigue.
One hundred and five males with an average age of 60 and testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL participated in the study. They received 100 mg of tongkat ali extract, 200 mg of tongkat ali extract, or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. The researchers evaluated serum total and free testosterone levels, Changes in Aging Male Symptoms scores, and Fatigue Severity Scale scores at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12.
Participants in the 200 mg group saw significant increases in total testosterone levels beginning at week 4 and continuing through the end of the study period. Participants in the 100 mg group saw significant increases in total testosterone levels by week 12 compared to the placebo group.
Participants in the 100 mg and 200 mg groups saw significant improvements in their Changes in Aging Male Symptoms scores, and Fatigue Severity Scale scores by the end of the study period compared to the placebo group. They also saw significant increases in muscle strength.
The study was conducted by researchers from Oriana Hospital and Lokmanya Multi-Specialty Hospital. It was published online ahead of print on May 19, 2021 in the journal Food and Nutrition Research.
