Turmeric May Help Improve Knee Discomfort and Function
Turmeric is a root plant native to Asia. It is a common spice and a major ingredient in curry powder. A recent study has found that supplementation with turmeric may help alleviate knee discomfort and improve joint function.
Ninety-six adults who experienced chronic knee pain after physical exertion participated in the study. They were given 250 mg of water-dispersible turmeric or a placebo daily for 90 days. The visual analog scale was used to evaluate knee pain at baseline, day 45, and day 90. Joint function was evaluated using a fast-paced walk test and a 9-step stair climb.
Participants in the turmeric group saw improvements in knee pain compared to the placebo group. They also saw significant improvements in time taken to complete the fast-paced walk test and the stair climb test.
The study was conducted by researchers from Inventia Healthcare Ltd. It was published online ahead of print on May 21, 2021, in the journal Clinical Pharmacology.
