Fruit Compound May Help Improve Muscle Endurance
Urolithin A is a natural compound produced by gut bacteria and found in small amounts in fruits like pomegranates, nuts, raspberries, strawberries, and tropical fruits. A new study has found that supplementation with urolithin A may help improve muscle endurance in mature adults.
Sixty-six healthy adults with an average age of 71 participated in the study. They were given 1,000 mg of urolithin A or a placebo daily for 4 months. Muscle endurance of hand and leg skeletal muscles was evaluated at baseline, 2 months, and 4 months. Cellular health biomarkers were also evaluated.
Participants in the urolithin A group saw improvements in muscle endurance compared to baseline. They also saw reductions in biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress.
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Washington Medical Center. It was published online ahead of print on January 20, 2022 in the journal JAMA Open Network.
An earlier study found that urolithin A may help improve cellular health.
