Vitamin D Supplementation May Provide Liver Health Benefits

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for the body that the body needs to absorb calcium. Vitamin D also plays a role in maintaining healthy bones and teeth. A recent study suggests that vitamin D supplementation may provide liver health benefits for people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

22 overweight women with NAFLD participated in the study. Half received 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily for 6 weeks. The other half received a placebo. Participants performed two treadmill eccentric exhaustive exercises at baseline and at the end of the study period. Previous research has found that eccentric exhaustive exercise may cause increases in liver enzymes and lipids.

Blood samples were taken before and after the initial exercise protocol and before and after the second exercise protocol. They were used to evaluate liver enzymes, lipid profile, and vitamin D levels.

Participants in the vitamin D group saw significantly lower levels of three liver enzymes, ALT, AST, and GGT, compared to the placebo group. They also saw significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. In addition, HDL cholesterol and vitamin D levels were significantly higher in the vitamin D group compared to the control group.

Participants in the vitamin D group also saw significant reductions in bodyweight, BMI, body fat percentage, and waist hip ratio.

The study was conducted by researchers from Razi University. It was published online ahead of print on August 5, 2022 in the journal BMC Gastroenterology.

A previous study found that a combination supplement may help support liver health.
