Yeast Beta-Glucan May Help Reduce Cold Occurrence and Symptoms
Many home remedies have been suggested through the years to combat the common cold, but to date none have had scientific evidence to back it up. Now, however, a recent study suggests that taking yeast beta-glucan extract supplements may decrease the number of colds you get by 25% as well as reduce the severity of symptoms.
The study included 162 participants between the ages of 18 and 70, all of whom had suffered from at least three colds in the six months before the trial. Over the course of 16 weeks, half of the group took 900 mg of yeast beta-glucan daily, while the other half took a placebo.
Participants were checked at the beginning of the study, at the eight week point, and at the conclusion of the study. They were also checked on the fifth day of any reported cold incidence.
After the study period, the researchers noted a 25% lower incidence of infection in the supplement group. They also noticed that the supplement group had less severe symptoms compared to those who took the placebo.
The study was conducted by researchers associated with the German firm Leiber. It was published online ahead of print on January 23, 2013, in the European Journal of Nutrition.
Previous studies have shown that beta-glucan derived from baker’s yeast produces the best immune support results of all beta glucans. It has also been linked with lower cholesterol, managing diabetes, controlling allergies and improving the appearance of skin.
Yeast beta-glucan can be found in baker’s yeast. A high quality supplement is also a good option if you’re looking to increase your yeast beta-glucan intake.
