Your heart is the central engine of circulation. Contracting and relaxing about 100,000 times a day and 36 million times a year, your heart tirelessly pumps blood throughout your body and keeps cells oxygenated, fed, protected and functioning.
That’s a lot of work, and frames why we need to support the health of our heart, arteries and the endothelium – which is a thin layer of cells that line and protect blood vessels.
In fact, the health of the endothelium provides a good indication of your overall cardiovascular health because endothelial cells are affected by…
- LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels
- C-reactive protein (a measure of inflammation) levels
- Oxidative stress levels
- Key antioxidant levels and
- Nitric oxide levels (promotes blood flow)
Over the last 15 years, scientists have discovered that an ancient berry may help you maintain normal levels of ALL of these factors.
This fruit is one of the most important medicinal berries in the Indian traditional system of Ayurvedic medicine, and it’s called amla, or Indian gooseberry.
Unique Polyphenols Provide Many Cardiovascular Benefits
Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but in doing so make themselves vulnerable to oxidative stress.
Over thousands of years, plants developed polyphenols to help protect themselves from free radicals resulting from oxidation.
Better yet, when we consume these plants or their extracts, these same polyphenols may help protect us from oxidative stress and the effects it has as we age.
Many different types of polyphenols exist in the botanical world, and the specific types naturally found in amla yield a multitude of cardiovascular health promoting benefits.
This is why we call it the new “Gold Standard” in heart health. These unique polyphenols can help support you in many ways as outlined above. Here’s why…
Amla Uniquely Provides Cascading Waves of Protection – with No Pro-Oxidant Activity
The secret to amla’s superior antioxidant properties is found in its unique combination of polyphenols.
The two most important amla polyphenols are tannins named Emblicanin A and Emblicanin B.
Emblicanins are different from many other antioxidants because they 1) do not have any pro-oxidant properties and 2) have “cascading” antioxidant activity.
If a polyphenol has “pro-oxidant” properties, it means that while it provides antioxidant activity, under certain circumstances it can do the opposite, and act as a pro-oxidant and create more free radicals.
Some factors that help determine a polyphenol’s pro-oxidant potential include its metal reducing properties (how it reacts when encountering metals like iron and copper), chelating behavior, pH, and solubility characteristics.
Since most of us are looking for polyphenols to help neutralize free radicals and not create more free radicals, it helps to supplement with polyphenols that have little or no pro-oxidant activity.
And that’s what you get from the Emblicanins in amla!
But that’s not all. The Emblicanins in amla have another unique feature that helps contribute to their potency.
You see, many antioxidants exhaust themselves after neutralizing a free radical, and their remnants aren’t much help in your body’s continuing fight against free radicals.
On the other hand, after neutralizing a free radical, Emblicanins switch on a multilevel cascade of antioxidant compounds that help your body from being overwhelmed by free radicals.
In other words, the remnants of Emblicanins don’t exhaust themselves. Instead, the resulting metabolites also have antioxidant properties to continue supporting you in the battle against free radicals.
As you can imagine, being able to prolong free radical scavenging effects help make Emblicanins more valuable to the body.
And scientific research from the last dozen years has indicated that the part of your body that benefits the most may be your cardiovascular system….
Modern Science is Now Validating the Potential Benefits of Amla
We believe the potency of amla Emblicanins is clear, however, the quality of amla extracts can vary widely.
The premier amla extract for use in supplements in branded as Capros®. Here are some of the features of Capros® that make it different…
- Only FRESH amla fruit is used, to help ensure stable polyphenols
- No pesticides are used
- No harsh solvents are used in the extraction process
- Each batch is tested for microbials and heavy metals, and perhaps most important…
- Capros contains a minimum of 60% polyphenol tannins, much more than ordinary amla extracts
As important, Capros® has been the subject of numerous published research studies demonstrating many potential cardiovascular health benefits.
No other amla extract we’re aware of has the depth of scientific support as does Capros®.
The latest study published in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal, was interesting because the full menu of potential Capros® cardiovascular benefits was on display.
This study was a randomized double blind, placebo controlled study involving 59 men and women between the ages of 30 and 68 (average age of 57). The participants were characterized as “healthy volunteers” with pre-metabolic syndrome symptoms.
The subjects were divided into three groups who took the following daily for 12 weeks: i) 500mg of Capros®, ii) 1,000mg of Capros®, or a iii) placebo.
The researchers were interested in investigating the effect of endothelial function by looking at numerous cardiovascular health markers – and the results from both Capros® dosage levels were impressive.
Even though, on average, the study participants had total cholesterol levels already in a normal range, they saw a marked improvement from taking 500mg of Capros®, and the results of those taking 1,000mg were even better.
Similarly, the results indicate that Capros® may help you maintain and optimize all of the cholesterol fractions – LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
As with total cholesterol, both Capros® groups improved relative to the placebo, but a greater effect was recorded in those taking 1,000mg a day.
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of systemic inflammation in the body and a measure of cardiovascular health.
Remember, according to a study by researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), most heart attacks occurred in people whose cholesterol levels did not indicate cardiac risk, so while maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is important, there are numerous other factors you should monitor to optimize heart health.
CRP is one of them, and more specifically, high sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), is currently considered one of the best inflammation markers.
At the start of the study, the subjects, on average, had an hsCRP level considered to be in healthy range.
Those taking the placebo did not benefit, whereas both Capros® groups improved their hsCRP levels. As with cholesterol levels, those taking 1,000mg per day improved even more than those taking 500mg.
As you know, maintaining good blood flow is an important part of cardiovascular health. As we age, it gets harder for the body to synthesize nitric oxide – which promotes blood flow by helping arteries and blood vessels relax.
The researchers found that Capros® supplementation improved nitric oxide levels in the blood, with the 1,000mg dose resulting in a slightly greater effect than 500mg.
Other research found that Capros® promotes and activates the eNOS enzyme, which your body can use to convert L-arginine to nitric oxide. This is particularly helpful as we age and don’t make this conversion as easily.
Finally, as you’d expect, the study found that Capros® can help reduce oxidative stress and support higher blood levels of the key antioxidant, glutathione.
Oxidative stress was determined by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the blood. MDA is formed as a result of lipid peroxidation, which can occur when free radicals damage fats in cell membranes as a part of oxidative degradation.
Both Capros® dosage levels reduced MDA levels markedly, indicating less oxidative stress and free radical damage.
On the other side of the coin, the reduction in oxidative stress with Capros® helped increase glutathione (GSH) levels. Glutathione is known as the “master antioxidant” indicating its importance in the body.
There was a notable increase GSH in those taking 500mg of Capros®, and the effect in those taking 1,000mg was much greater.
When you put all of this together, the multiple functions of Capros® that can help balance the body, maintain healthy levels of cardiovascular health markers and protect against oxidative stress make Capros® one of the premier botanicals for promoting heart health.
