Two of the most powerful oral probiotics are protective Streptococcus salivarius strains. They are named BLIS K12 and BLIS M18, and were developed by Professor John Tagg, a microbiologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. In his research, Professor Tagg found that individuals who can naturally produce the beneficial Streptococcus salivarius organisms are less susceptible to oral health problems. Unfortunately, less than 10% of us naturally produce these strains, hence the reason to supplement with BLIS K12 and BLIS M18.
BLIS K12 helps stimulate the immune system to help support upper respiratory (ear, nose, throat) health and help reduce bad breath. BLIS M18 works more directly on dental health, helping to inhibit the formation of dental plaque, which can cause cavities and harm gum health. This can translate into less gum bleeding, and healthier teeth and gums. BLIS 18 can also help neutralize acid that may harm teeth and gums.
