5 Things to Look for in an Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplement

It’s been 50 years since researchers first established the link between omega-3s and heart health – which started by looking at the diets of certain heart healthy cultures like the Japanese and indigenous people in the Greenland and Arctic regions.

The common factor in these populations is they all consumed a lot of fish, which led to the discovery of the link between heart health and the key omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA.

This was in the early 1970s and since then there’s been an overwhelming amount of additional research supporting this finding and we now know there are numerous ways omega-3s can help heart health.

Omega-3s can help you:

  • •   Maintain healthy triglyceride and blood pressure levels,
  • •   Support healthy blood flow,
  • •   Promote a healthy inflammation response in the body,
  • •   Protect blood vessels from damage as we age, and more.

And that’s just the start.

Ongoing research has shown that consuming healthy amounts of omega-3s benefits numerous parts of our health including brain, bone, joint, vision health – as well as promoting longevity and healthy aging.

The challenge is most of us struggle to consume adequate amounts of omega-3s from diet alone – because we don’t eat enough fish. On average, Americans only eat about 2 servings per month of fatty fish (salmon, tuna, trout, sardines), when most dietary guidance recommends 2 servings per week.

And even if you do eat fish, the omega-3 content can vary based on the species, how it’s prepared, and even where it’s sourced. Since omega-3 blood levels tend to be below ideal levels for Americans, taking a quality fish oil supplement is a good idea for most of us.

While there are some other sources emerging like algae, fish oil is still the best and most efficient way to get adequate amounts of EPA and DHA daily.

How Much EPA and DHA Should You Take?

In general, it’s recommended you consume around 1,000mg of EPA and DHA daily to maintain healthy omega-3 levels.

The consumption of the average American from diet alone is only about 100mg daily, so to bridge the gap, a highly bioavailable fish oil supplement is needed (more on this in a bit).

In our opinion, the best way to monitor your omega-3 levels is through the Omega-3 index test.

This measures the total fats in your blood (specifically in red blood cell membranes) and quantifies the percentage of those fats that are EPA and DHA, the key omega-3 fatty acids.

The typical percentage for the average American is between 5% and 6%, with the ideal range being between 8% and 12%, according to research.

You can find out your Omega-3 index score with a blood test you can do at home. The test from OmegaQuant is regarded as one of the best.

All they need is a few drops of blood from a simple finger prick, you mail your sample to the lab, and in 2 to 4 weeks they send your results.

Besides eating fish like salmon, you can raise your Omega-3 index score over 3 to 4 months with a supplement like TrueOmega-3, which features pure and sustainable AlaskOmega® fish oil.

This is coupled with the AquaCelle® delivery system, which has been shown to increase absorption and bioavailability of the EPA and DHA be up to 6.0x.

Below we outline the 5 things you should look for in a fish oil supplement – and how TrueOmega-3 checks all of the boxes.

#1 - EPA & DHA Potency with No Burping

Each serving of TrueOmega-3 delivers 910 milligrams of EPA and DHA — in just 2 easy- to-swallow soft gels.

This combined with diet should allow you to reach the 1,000mg target on most days.

As important, you’re actually absorbing the omega-3s and putting them to work thanks to the AquaCelle® delivery system.

Also, AquaCelle®’s helps eliminate fishy burps or aftertaste — a common reason why people stop taking fish oil.

As mentioned, TrueOmega-3 uses AlaskOmega® fish oil, which is harvested from one of the most sustainable fisheries in the world.

#2 – High Purity Fish Oil

AlaskOmega® fish oil is extracted from wild Alaskan pollock (codfish family) caught in Alaska’s cold, clear Bering Sea.

Alaskan pollock are typically 12 to 20 inches in length and ½ to 2 pounds in weight.

Using small fish is a great starting point because they don’t have nearly the toxin buildup of larger, more fatty fish.

The AlaskOmega® fish oil is further purified using a multistep filtration process developed over 30 years to remove toxic heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, and other pollutants.

The resulting purity level is far better than standards set by the fish oil industry, and the oil is virtually free of contaminants and heavy metals.

#3 – Freshness With Low Oxidation Risk

In addition, AlaskOmega® is the market leader in freshness, a feature that’s often overlooked when judging fish oil supplement quality.

Freshness matters because when omega-3s are oxidized, it degrades their nutritional value as the oil becomes rancid. The fatty acids structurally crumble and lose potency.

Plus, when fish oil loses freshness, it’s more likely to cause fishy burps and repeating.

AlaskOmega® has a very low risk of oxidation as demonstrated by its TOTOX (Total Oxidation Value) score, which measures future oxidation potential.

The industry standard is a max of 26, but AlaskOmega® has a value less than 5, far better than other fish oils, making it a leader in freshness.

As an extra precaution to preserve freshness and stability, we add a small amount of natural vitamin E to the fish oil because it has strong antioxidant properties.

#4 - Sustainability

Since overfishing is a big concern, we urge you to choose an omega-3 supplement that contains oil sourced from fish sustainably harvested and upcycled (e.g. oil is extracted from scraps).

Another reason we chose AlaskOmega® for our TrueOmega-3 supplement is the Alaska Pollock fishery in the Bering Sea is considered one of the best managed fisheries in the world.

To give you a sense of this, the annual catch is 50% below the overfishing threshold level.

In other words, 2x the number of fish could be caught, and it would still be at sustainable levels to maintain the fish population. So it’s a very healthy fishery.

Also important, the AlaskOmega® fish oil is an upcycled product – after the fish is filleted for human food consumption, the oil is extracted from the remaining trimmings.

No fish are being caught solely for use in fish oil supplements, AlaskOmega® is making use of the scraps so the entire fish gets used – it’s the ultimate in sustainability.

#5 – Superior Absorption & Bioavailability

You can have a pure, fresh, and sustainable fish oil supplement, but if significant amounts of the EPA and DHA don’t reach the bloodstream, then it will be hard to increase omega-3 levels in your body.

You may have been advised to take a supplement made with the triglyceride form of fish oil because the EPA and DHA gets absorbed about 1.3x better (but can cost you twice as much).

With the AquaCelle® enhanced delivery system in TrueOmega-3, you can get much better results – up to 6.0x better – at a much lower cost.

This was demonstrated in a research study published in the European Journal of Nutrition that combined AlaskOmega® fish oil and AquaCelle® – essentially the same formula you get in TrueOmega-3.

Adding AquaCelle® increased the absorption and bioavailability of the EPA and DHA omega-3s by 6.0x, on average, over 24 hours compared to taking the fish oil alone. Even better AquaCelle® helped eliminate fishy burping and repeating.

How does it work?

Since our digestive system is water based and oil and water don’t mix, our bodies need to do extra work to digest fats and oils. This is why we’re encouraged to take fish oil after a meal when your body is in fat digestion mode.

You don’t have to worry about this with the AquaCelle® in TrueOmega-3, because it naturally does the emulsifying work for your body, so the fish oil is ready for digestion when you take the TrueOmega-3 soft gels.

This allows you to absorb significantly more of the EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids.

You’d have to take multiple servings of regular fish oil to come close to what you can experience with TrueOmega-3.

When you put it all together, this makes TrueOmega-3 the perfect fish oil supplement to increase and maintain a healthy level of omega-3s in your blood.
