AlaskOmega® – #1 in Freshness, From Sustainable Bering Sea Fishery
Overfishing of the oceans is something we all should be mindful of, which is why when seeking a fish oil supplement you should make sure it’s from a sustainable source, that is also pure, potent and fresh.
The fish oil from AlaskOmega® passes all of these tests with flying colors.
AlaskOmega® fish oil comes from Wild Alaska Pollock (codfish family) caught in Alaska’s cold, clear Bering Sea. The Alaska Pollock fishery is considered one of the best managed fisheries of the world thanks to a holistic approach developed over 40 years.
For example, a recent assessment of the annual catch of Pollock Biomass found that just 15% of all Pollock Biomass was caught during the year, keeping the fishery healthy, robust and growing. In fact, in the following year, it was found that Alaskan Pollock Biomass had increased by an impressive 65%.
What’s more, Alaskan Pollock are caught with mid water, pelagic trawls, NOT destructive demersal bottom trawls that can harm marine natural resources. This also results in less than 1% bycatch of non-target species.
Reflecting these practices, AlaskOmega® fish oil is certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), considered by many to be the gold standard of sustainability certification. The MSC certification also covers Chain of Custody and Traceability.
Alaskan Pollock are typically 12 to 20 inches in length and ½ to 2 pounds in weight. Using small fish is a great starting point because they don’t have nearly the toxin buildup of larger, more fatty fish like salmon or tuna.
However, even in pristine Alaskan waters, fish can still contain contaminants. So once the fish are caught and the oil is extracted, AlaskOmega® fish oils go through a special “molecular distillation” purification and filtration process to remove any toxic heavy metals, PCB’s, dioxins or other impurities. This process takes place in the company’s NSF-Certified GMP facility.
This results in a premium quality fish oil that exceeds all quality standards set by health authorities worldwide. This includes being well within the standards set by GOED (Global Organization for EPA and DHA), whose standards are more strict than any single regulator in the world (including USP).
On top of this, AlaskOmega® has a market leading position for oil freshness.
Oxidation of fish oil is an important issue that is not discussed nearly enough. This occurs when three main culprits – light, oxygen and metal ions – cause fish oil to degrade and become rancid.
Not only does this affect the taste and smell of the fish oil, but also oxidation causes something much worse. It causes breaks in the structure of the omega-3 fatty acids.
The EPA and DHA literally crumble and lose their nutritional value, so you don’t get the benefits of taking these wonderful nutrients.
To ensure you get the “freshest” product possible, extra steps are taken with AlaskOmega® to prevent oxidation.
It all starts immediately after the fish is caught. Within one to two hours, the oil is cold extracted from the fish. After that, protective actions are taken to ensure the fish is minimally exposed to light, heat and oxygen.
This includes the purification process, which takes place under inert gas to further prevent oxidation and ensure the utmost freshness and quality.
During purification, compounds that make the fish oil more prone to oxidation, such as “aldehydes,” are removed. In addition, deodorization removes fishy odor and taste, and provides excellent sensory characteristics (no burping).
These efforts result in a fish oil considered "top notch" in freshness.
A common way used by the omega-3 industry to assess freshness is the Total Oxidation (TOTOX) marker. TOTOX is a measure of both primary and secondary oil oxidation.
The rigid standard for TOTOX set by GOED is no more than 26.0, but the AlaskOmega® limit is just 5.0. And actually, AlaskOmega® values typically range from 0 to 3, reflecting its market-leading position for oil freshness.
A second indicator of freshness in Peroxide Value (PV). Once again AlaskOmega® standards are much high than GOED industry standards. Whereas GOED has a maximum PV value of 5.0, the maximum value for the AlaskOmega® fish oil in TrueOmega-3™ is 80% lower, or 1.0.
To reduce oxidation risk further, we protect your fish oil by buffering it with powerful antioxidants. These are natural forms of vitamin E from sunflower oil called “mixed tocopherols.”
Together these antioxidants help to prevent the oxidation of fish oil and keep it fresh for its entire shelf life. And that’s why they are in TrueOmega-3™.
