Dear Friends,
I hope you are well and have something enjoyable planned for the weekend.
I’m finding there’s some confusion about vitamin K2 and vitamin D, so I wanted to address some frequent questions we’re getting - and please feel free to share this with others.
For starters, although vitamin K2 and vitamin D work together and depend on each other to perform some very important functions in the body we all care about, you don’t have to take them in the same supplement to benefit – they could be in different supplement products that you’re taking.
What matters is that you are supplementing with both vitamin K2 and vitamin D daily because diet and sun exposure (in the case of vitamin D) typically don’t give our bodies what we need. Unless you’re eating fermented vegetables regularly, it’s highly unlikely you’re getting enough vitamin K2 daily.
Personally, I do take them together for convenience and because they’re both fat-soluble vitamins that are best to take after a meal.
That’s why I upgraded from our D3 supplement to TrueK2D3 when we introduced it a few years ago - and advise others to do the same (note: if you’re taking a blood thinner medication, you need to consult with your physician before taking a vitamin K supplement).
While there’s no extra benefit to taking vitamin K2 and D3 together in a capsule (beyond convenience), similarly it doesn’t hurt absorption or potency when they are combined in the same capsule as some have suggested.
I’ve posed this specific question to the makers of MenaQ7, who have done more research with vitamin K2 than any other single organization in the world, and they don’t believe it’s the case – and in fact, support the combination of vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 in the same product.
Let’s quickly review a couple of ways this dynamic duo works together in the body.
Keep in mind, that new research is revealing additional ways vitamin K2 and vitamin D may support wellness and healthy aging – and we’ll certainly keep you up to date!
Our favorite function of these vitamins is they direct calcium to where you want it – in your bones, and out of your arteries. Here’s how it works…
Vitamin D is known for helping to get calcium absorbed into the bloodstream, but it does something else crucial for healthy bone formation – it helps make a protein (called osteocalcin) that works to bind the calcium to the bone for stronger, more dense bones.
Sounds good, right? Here’s the part that was missed for many years… for this osteocalcin protein to spring into action, it needs vitamin K2 to activate it.
Otherwise, it doesn’t go to work – it’s like a parked car that sits there till the driver starts the ignition.
That alone is a good reason to make sure our bodies have enough vitamin D and vitamin K2 daily, but there’s another, equally important part to the calcium equation.
As you know, the accumulation of excess calcium in our arteries and blood vessels can be devastating to our cardiovascular and heart health. Your body uses the vitamin D and vitamin K2 tag-team to keep calcium out of the vascular system.
Like with bone health, vitamin D helps create a protein, this one is called Matrix Gla, that repels calcium as it attempts to deposit in arteries and soft tissues, and instead the calcium gets redirected to places it can be useful, like bones.
However, vitamin K2 is needed to activate this protein, or else this protein can’t do its job efficiently.
Pretty awesome teamwork, right?
That’s why we’re so passionate about supplementing with both of these vitamins, and TrueK2D3 is an easy way to get what you need daily.
As always, we're using top-shelf ingredients like MenaQ7® vitamin K2 and Veg-D3® vitamin D3 (sourced from algae) to support your wellness journey.
