In this letter, we’re going to explore what I think may be one of the most important natural discoveries for joint health – which is an extract from the seeds of a tree called tamarind.
What’s most exciting to me is how including tamarind resulted in significantly better outcomes in many measures of joint health and joint function compared to some tried and true ingredients known to be beneficial for joint health.
In a head-to-head study, the addition of tamarind produced better and faster joint health results, on average. This doesn’t make these other ingredients bad - it illustrates the power of tamarind.
Where Are Tamarind Trees Found?
Most folks aren’t familiar with tamarind trees. I certainly had not heard of them till a few years ago.
Tamarind trees are found in tropical and subtropical regions like India, Africa, and Southeast Asia. The fruit and pulp of tamarind is often used as flavoring for cooking in these cultures.
For example, if you’ve ever had the Thai food dish Pad thai, tamarind paste is typically used to make the sauce.
You may be wondering… If tamarind trees have been around for thousands of years, how did it take until the 21st century to figure out the seeds have these amazing joint health properties?
Well, it was kind of discovered by chance.
Older Villagers Were Unusually Mobile and Limber
A practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine (traditional medicine in India) came upon a remote village in India where he noticed the older population was unusually mobile and limber.
He started studying the lifestyle and dietary habits of the villagers, and discovered they used tamarind seeds in their flour, which he hadn’t seen before.
This village was relatively poor, and the locals added the tamarind (which they had in abundance) because it helped add bulk to the flour, allowing them to feed more villagers.
This sparked scientific research into tamarind seeds, and it was found that the nutritional profile can help support joint health in multiple ways – which helped explain why the villagers were very mobile and demonstrating superior joint health.
Supports Normal Activity of These Enzymes
You may be familiar with the COX-2 and 5-LOX enzymes, which convert the fatty acid arachidonic acid into molecules that can disrupt a healthy inflammation response in the body.
Inflammation gets a bad rap, but a normal healthy inflammation response in your body is a necessary part of healthy living. For example, inflammation is needed to protect us from harmful threats, and some inflammation is even needed to build muscle mass.
The key is to avoid excess amounts that can contribute to discomfort and other health problems. An important part of this goal is maintaining normal activity of the COX-2 and 5-LOX enzymes.
A unique feature of tamarind seed is it can help support the normal activity of both enzymes, which is rare for natural plant extracts. This is a key reason why tamarind can help support better joint comfort, mobility, and function.
And that’s not all, tamarind seeds also help support the health of joint cartilage too, which is another important component of joint health.
Here’s Where The Story Gets Even More Interesting
These findings were brought to the attention of one of the world’s premier botanicals research companies, Laila Nutraceuticals in India.
They too were impressed with the joint health properties of tamarind, but they found combining tamarind with turmeric root extract resulted in something even better for joints.
You may know that turmeric and its key compound curcumin, are good for joint health - that’s pretty well established. The only challenge is you need to take a relatively large amount of turmeric daily to get desired results.
The Laila scientists found that combining a relatively small amount of turmeric with tamarind created something much more powerful. In fact, this blend exhibited much better joint health support than tamarind or turmeric separately on their own.
This botanical combination is called TamaFlex – and 3 published placebo-controlled studies show it can offer you several joint health benefits that can make a big difference in your life and how you feel.
Here’s a quick summary of how TamaFlex may help your joint health based on this research:

My Personal Favorite TamaFlex Result
On top of this, in a series of tests, TamaFlex greatly improved the functional performance of joints in activities important for normal daily living. These tests included:

(iii) the ability to repeatedly sit and stand.
In all tests, those taking TamaFlex recorded very impressive gains compared to the placebo group, on average.
These results are a great indication that TamaFlex users were feeling better, and their joints were moving and functioning better.
Here’s the real kicker that illustrates why I think you should look for tamarind and TamaFlex in your joint health supplement:
The last study compared TamaFlex to one of the most popular joint supplement formulas sold, which is the curcumin and Boswellia serrata combination.
And frankly, the results weren’t close – over 30 days TamaFlex was far superior on just about every measure tested.
I’ll share one quick example with the stair climb test, which counted the number of seconds it took to climb up and down a flight of stairs.
Over 30 days, those taking a placebo didn’t improve meaningfully - their initial score was 15.4 seconds and improved by only 0.7 seconds.
The curcumin/boswellia group did significantly better than that, taking about 1.8 seconds off their average time after 30 days – a solid improvement.
However, the TamaFlex group far outperformed both groups – taking a full 5 seconds off their time to go up and down a flight of stairs (32% less time), on average.
The TamaFlex result was almost 3x the rate of improvement seen with the curcumin/boswellia group.
