Association Found Between Hydration and Obesity
Until now, the relationship between weight status and hydration has been unclear. A recent study has found that there is a link between inadequate hydration and high BMI, as well as inadequate hydration and obesity.
Researchers from the University of Michigan Medical School examined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which took place between 2009 and 2012. The Survey included 9,528 participants between the ages of 18 and 64, with a mean age of 41.
After examining the data, the researchers found that 32.6% of the participants were not adequately hydrated. They also found that people with higher BMIs and those who were obese were more likely to be inadequately hydrated.
Due to the fact that the data for this study was cross-sectional, the researchers were not able to state whether dehydration causes obesity or vice versa. However, they were able to show an important relationship between the two.
The study was published in the July/August 2016 issue of Annals of Family Medicine.
The human body is made up of approximately 60% water, which makes proper hydration essential for everything from energy levels to joint lubrication to warding off headaches. While some hydration can come from fruits and vegetables that have high water content, your best bet for staying hydrated is to drink lots of water.
