Study Finds Link Between Vitamin K Levels And Eye Health

Active matrix GLA protein (MGP), which helps preserve various elements of the eye, requires vitamin K to be activated. A new study suggests a link between vitamin K levels and eye health.

For this study, the researchers randomly recruited 935 people who were already participating in the longitudinal population study called FLEMENGHO. Researchers collected measurements at baseline and at follow-up of plasma desphospho-uncarboxylated MGP (dp–ucMGP) and retinal microvascular diameters. Dp–ucMGP is the inactive form of MGP and is a marker of poor vitamin K status.

The researchers found that participants with the highest levels of dp–ucMGP saw decreases in microvascular retinal diameter. For participants whose dp–ucMGP doubled from baseline, the diameter of the central retinal arteriolar decreased by 1.40?µm. Decreases in retinal microvascular diameters indicate the presence of small vessel damage.

The researchers believe their findings show the possibility that vitamin K supplementation may help maintain eye health.

Researchers from the University of Leuven in Belguim conducted the study. It was published on October 10, 2018, in Scientific Reports.
