Want To Lose Weight? Try Eating This For Breakfast
A new study brings good news for those looking to shed some extra pounds; consuming high levels of vitamin D and calcium for breakfast may help you lose weight and burn more fat throughout the day.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Curtin University of Technology in Australia and their findings were published in the January 2011 issue of the journal Clinical Nutrition.
The researchers recruited 11 people with an average age of 54 with an average BMI of 31 (which is considered obese). The participants were randomly assigned to consume meals containing low or high calcium and vitamin D.
The researchers found that participants given the meals with the highest levels of calcium and vitamin D consumed significantly less calories over the following 24 hour period. They also observed an increase in fat oxidation and an increase in a measure of calorie burning called “induction of thermogenesis”, which refers to the generation of heat by the body.
These findings provide another reason to increase your calcium and vitamin D intake, particularly early in the day. Previous research has shown that eating a breakfast with high quality protein early in the day increases levels of fullness throughout the day.
Although breakfast is touted as the most important meal of the day, many people don't have the time to prepare a healthy meal each morning. With a little planning (preparing breakfast the night before) and stocking the refrigerator with foods high in calcium, vitamin D and protein such as yogurt, cheeses and meats you may find that a filling breakfast is the key to losing those extra pounds.
